Fibre's different jobs
Explain that fibre is not one single substance and that a food can contribute in more than one way.
Fibre is often discussed as if it has one job. In practice, different fibres can add structure, form a soft gel, and provide material that gut microbes can use.
Build the fibre toolkit
Place each example into every basket that may apply. Overlap is the point; there is no healthy/unhealthy basket.
- Structure and bulk: Fibres that keep more of their structure can contribute bulk.
- Gel and softness: Some fibres dissolve or form a gel that holds water.
- Material for microbes: Some fibres can be fermented by gut microbes.
| Food example | Structure and bulk | Gel and softness | Material for microbes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oats | — | Yes | Yes |
| Lentils | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Pear | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Wholegrain bread | Yes | — | Yes |
The idea in plain language
Some fibres help add structure and bulk to stool. Others dissolve or form a gel that can help hold water. Fermentable fibres can be used by gut microbes. These categories overlap: one food can contribute more than one type of fibre, and foods contain different amounts and mixtures.
Oats, lentils and fruit can contribute gel-forming or fermentable fibres as well as other fibre. Wholegrain foods and vegetable skins can add more structural fibre. This does not make one type universally better than another. Variety provides a broader mix.
How much fibre is comfortable differs between people and situations. Building up gradually and discussing individual needs with a doctor or Accredited Practising Dietitian is especially important if symptoms are active, intake has been restricted, or a procedure requires temporary changes.
Why can the same food reasonably sit in more than one fibre basket?
Foods contain mixtures of fibres, so the baskets describe overlapping jobs rather than good-or-bad categories.
You explored three overlapping jobs fibre can do.
Build a question
- Which kinds of fibre are most relevant to discuss for my situation?
- If I change my fibre intake, how gradually should I do that with my care team?
